Global warming and its consequences are changing not only our reality, but the future of global agriculture. It is putting the food security and livelihoods of the world, and rural communities in particular, at greater risk.Diminished water availability and supply, loss of biodiversity and soil quality, decreased food security and income from agriculture-related activities are likely to be the greatest impacts of the climate crisis. Environmental disasters, coupled with their social consequences, and especially worsening conditions of production, all increase the need for communities to leave their territories.

By 2050, the World Bank predicts that 17 million people may be forced to move in Latin America as a result of the effects of climate change. Rural communities are already affected by increasingly recurrent climate-related phenomena, triggering migration to urban centres, regions dominated by large estates and agro-industry, and international migration in search of employment and better living conditions. We know that these phenomena are global in scope and impact different contexts. In that case, why is it important to talk about the semi-arid regions of Latin America?

The session aims to deepen the debate from the perspective of those territories historically impacted by climate phenomena, and that have created resilient forms of adaptation and coexistence with the climate. In order to reflect on the current challenges – but also to give visibility to good practices and adaptation strategies – Latin American regions will share their experiences based on the work of organisations, governments and rural youth. This exercise will lead to shared analyses creating a greater understanding of the phenomena that impact the semi-arid regions.It also aims to create common ground for regional advocacy efforts and coordinated actions.

O aquecimento global e suas consequências estão mudando a realidade e as perspectivas futuras da agricultura global e colocando em maior risco a segurança alimentar e os meios de subsistência das pessoas em geral e das comunidades rurais em particular. Os maiores impactos são esperados na disponibilidade e no fornecimento de água, na perda de biodiversidade e na qualidade do solo, na segurança alimentar e na renda das atividades relacionadas à agricultura. Os desastres ambientais, juntamente com suas consequências sociais e, principalmente, a piora das condições produtivas, multiplicam a necessidade de as comunidades deixarem seus territórios.

Até 2050, projeta-se que 17 milhões de pessoas poderão ser forçadas a migrarem na América Latina em decorrência dos efeitos das mudanças climáticas (Banco Mundial, 2023). As comunidades rurais já são afetadas por esses fenômenos cada vez mais recorrentes, desencadeando a migração para centros urbanos, regiões dominadas pelo latifúndio e pelo agronegócio, e a migração internacional em busca de emprego e melhores condições de vida. Sabemos que esses fenômenos são de alcance global e impactam diferentes contextos. Nesse caso, por que é importante falar sobre os semiáridos?

A sessão tem como objetivo aprofundar o debate a partir da perspectiva desses territórios que foram historicamente impactados e criaram formas resilientes de adaptação e convivência com o seu clima. Para refletir sobre os desafios atuais, mas também para dar visibilidade às boas práticas e estratégias de adaptação, serão compartilhadas as experiências das regiões latino-americanas, com base no trabalho de organizações, governos e jovens rurais, o que levará a análises compartilhadas que permitirão uma maior compreensão dos fenômenos que impactam as regiões semiáridas, bem como a construção de mensagenspara a incidência regional e ações coordenadas.
