Urgent challenges after the Summit: How to move towards truly sustainable agri-food systems?

Food systems need to be transformed to become sustainable and equitable, and we are all co-responsible for this change. To achieve this, land and territorial rights are central, as production, processing, trade and consumption - which are part of food systems - have their starting point in these rights.
Despite this, land concentration in Latin America has increased exponentially: the Gini index for the region is 0.460 (ECLAC, 2020), making it one of the most unequal regions. This high concentration has been leveraged by a model that prioritises agribusiness and land grabbing for large-scale production, underestimating the capacity of peasant, family and ethnic community-based agriculture (ACFC by its Spanish acronym) to meet the food needs of the region's countries.
Agricultural production models, and therefore the prevailing food systems, are focused on economic profit, neglecting the food and nutritional needs of the population, who are demanding their right to food and food sovereignty, even more so in times of pandemic. If the current models are not transformed and if we do not begin to think of the ACFC as an actor mobilising change, it will be difficult to achieve the goals of zero hunger proposed by the 2030 Agenda to which governments in LAC have committed themselves.
The post-summit scenario poses the need to deepen the reflection and strategies that can be promoted to advance towards truly sustainable agri-food systems. The objective of this event is to analyse and reflect on the proposals that exist in Latin America on the political horizon of transforming agrifood systems towards more sustainable, inclusive and equitable systems, taking into account the agreements reached during the Summit and what they represent for the region.
