Climate crisis and resiliency potential of Latin America's semiarid regions

The semiarid regions of Latin America are being severely impacted by the effects of climate change, with an increase in extreme phenomena that is provoking even more emigration of the rural population. The loss of soil fertility and biodiversity, as well as the lack of access to water, are increasingly evident, particularly affecting indigenous and peasant populations, rural women and youth groups, Afro-descendant populations and other local groups.

However, thanks to its rich institutional and organisational history, and to the vast amount of natural, cultural and social resources, these regions have enormous potential for climate resilience and adaptive capacity to transform the climate crisis into a virtuous model of inclusive and sustainable development for millions of people.

The experiences and good practices developed in semiarid regions in relation to access to water, agro-ecological practices and management of the territory's natural resources have a high potential to contribute to hunger and poverty reduction, ecosystem restoration and adaptation to climate change. In that sense, they should be more and better known and replicated for the fulfilment of the 2030 Agenda.

In this session of the Land Forum, co-organised by the Semiarid Platform of Latin America and in partnership with the Articulation of the Brazilian Semiarid (ASA) and DAKI Semiárido Vivo, some of these experiences will be presented, with concrete solutions developed from the territories, showing their contributions to the SDGs, showing participants the diversity, complexity and resilience of the semiarid regions of Latin America.
