Contributions of rural youth to a sustainable world

With less than ten years to go before the deadline proposed by the 2030 Agenda for the achievement of the SDGs and in the context of a global pandemic, the centrality of youth in the fulfilment of these goals - and specifically the role of rural youth in the preservation of the planet - has become more relevant.
In a context in which the environmental crisis has been worsening, working on a generational change that guarantees a more sustainable development for the future has become a priority. How to advance towards this? What strategies should be developed so that young people have access to land and can thus carry out their life projects in rural areas in a sustainable way? How to ensure that development policy proposals are led by young people themselves?
The aim of this session of the Land Forum is to reflect on the need to recognise the contributions of rural youth to achieving the SDGs and the urgency of including their voices in this process. Rural youth contribute with diverse solutions in different areas of development: through agro-ecological productive enterprises, or with proposals for technological innovation in the generation of clean energy. They also contribute with the production of nutritional food based on traditional inputs, revaluing ancestral knowledge to counteract climate change, or contributing to the empowerment of young women to exercise their rights to territorial management.
This session will include the participation of young rural people who will present their experiences and reflect on their important role in achieving the SDGs. In addition, there will be a dialogue on the mechanisms that exist at national and regional level to contribute to this process, and in which rural youth can participate. It will also analyse the importance of access to land for young people in order to realise their life projects and the policies that have been implemented in some countries in the region for this purpose.
