Sowing the land: Rural Women's Voices and Alternatives against Extractivism in Latin America.

In Latin America there is an intensification of gender gaps in countries that depend on extractive industries, evidencing their differential impact on women and the deepening of gender-based inequalities and violence, hindering, even more, their rights securing, including their land rights and other natural common goods.

Therefore, extractivism limits women's opportunities for secure access to land and other resources and transforms the traditional economic activities that sustain their incomes. It also deepens the masculinization of decision-making on the use and management of land and territories by excluding women. On the other hand, it increases violence against women, exacerbating sexist patterns of domination and impacting rural women's bodies-territories, making them more vulnerable to situations of sexual violence, pimping and subordinate sexual roles.

Extractivism also generates the precariousness of care work, since the dispossession, contamination and masculinization of the labour force in extractive enclaves - to give an example - increases the work and time dedicated by rural women to unpaid care activities in homes and communities. It also violates food rights and food sovereignty by generating a loss of agrobiodiversity and food availability in the territories. Rural women are also at the front line of the territory's defence, which is why they suffer harassment, stigmatization and different forms of violence and cruel treatment.

Given this harsh scenario, rural women in Latin America, their organisations and the members of the Rural Women and Land Rights Initiative, have undertaken multiple actions as responses and alternative proposals that this session of the Land Forum will seek to make visible and disseminate from their own voices.
